SOS Children

About our charity

SOS Children is the world’s largest orphan charity. We believe all children should belong to a family which is why we look after children who have lost their parents through conflict, famine, disease, poverty or natural disaster. Over the last  60 years we have developed an approach based on building a community for children who have nobody to turn to by providing a purpose built home in a village where they can stay until ready for independent life.

These villages are at the heart of our work and provide every child with:

  • A mother – each child has a caring parent and a male influence is also always present in a children’s village
  • Brother and sisters – family ties grow naturally
  • A house – each family creates it’s own home
  • The village – each SOS family is part of a community

We currently run over 490 SOS Children’s Villages, directly caring for more than 70,000 children in 123 countries worldwide. We also invest in the futures of many thousands of children in the community, supporting and strengthening their families to enable them to stay together in the family home. Our vocational training centres and our 500 nursery, primary and secondary schools are open to children directly in our care and also to those from the local community. In areas where medical support is scarce or non existent, SOS Medical Centres provide communities with immediate medical treatment and preventative and palliative care.

By 2016 we aim to make sure 1 million children will grow up in a caring family environment of which 100,000 will be given a family home in a village and 900,000 will grow up in their own family with our support. With your help we can reach this goal.
